The SAP Arena is a multifunctional hall in the Baden-Württemberg city of Mannheim . The arena with up to 15,000 seats was opened in September 2005, construction began in November 2002. The name sponsor is the German software manufacturer SAP . During the planning phase it was named Mannheim-Arena .

use

The arena is home to the Adler Mannheim ice hockey club and the Rhein-Neckar Löwen handball club . It is also used occasionally for other sporting events, such as B. volleyball , indoor soccer , basketball , boxing , wrestling , but above all as a stage for concerts and as a meeting room. The cable network operator Unitymedia provides Wi-Fi internet access as a technology partner for all events in the multifunctional arena.

The SAP Arena complex

The arena also has two training halls for ice sports, which can be converted into banquet halls for special occasions.

Furthermore, several large parking lots with up to 7,000 parking spaces and two tram stops were created in the vicinity, from which the largest consumer fair in Germany, the Mannheimer Maimarkt , also benefited.

history

A new hall in Mannheim to replace the ailing ice rink at Friedrichspark has long been discussed. In the 1980s, the new measuring station was discussed as a location. Due to the success of the Adler Mannheim ice hockey team, the topic was discussed again at the end of the 1990s , but the city of Mannheim was financially unable to build.

The arena was realized using a model in which SAP co-founder and Adler sponsor Dietmar Hopp pre- finances the construction interest-free and operates the hall with its own company for the first 30 years at his own risk. The city of Mannheim will pay back the construction costs of 70 million euros in installments during this period. After 30 years, the arena becomes the property of the city. The two training halls were financed by Dietmar Hopp himself as a foundation.

The property was built by the general contractor Wayss & Freytag according to the planning of the Düsseldorf architects HPP Hentrich, Petschnigg & Partner . The construction consulting company Drees & Sommer carried out the project management and the economic and technical controlling.

More than 50 million euros were invested in the traffic infrastructure around the arena, which includes parking spaces, road feeders and public transport connections, around 80 percent of which was taken over by the federal government and the state. The remaining financing was borne by the city of Mannheim, which had to realign its investment planning for this project, which caused fierce controversy in local politics. After the first major events, it turned out that the DB marshalling yard could not cope with the onslaught of visitors after the end of the event and that it posed a considerable safety risk. By the timetable change in autumn 2011, the stop was relocated to the east to the new tram terminus and expanded to three tracks. In order to take into account the large number of special traffic and the often unfamiliar passengers, train destination displays were installed. In addition, the new stop was built barrier-free and above all saves wheelchair users the detour via Mannheim main station . The new station is now called Mannheim ARENA / Maimarkt and thus indicates the two event locations that are mainly being developed.

The festive opening took place on September 2nd and 3rd, 2005. Ronan Keating played the first show in the SAP Arena together with the State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate in front of 10,000 spectators. On the second day of the opening ceremony, the Mannheim singer Rolf Stahlhofen performed with his Mann'em Soul Orchestra and his musical friends such as Peter Maffay , Mousse T. and Sasha . The opening match between Adler Mannheim and the Dream Team of the German Ice Hockey League took place on September 6th . On September 8, the 2005/06 DEL season opened with the Adler Mannheim game against the DEG Metro Stars .

On January 21, 2006, the last test match of the German national handball team against Hungary for men before the European Championship in Switzerland took place in front of 13,200 spectators. At the time, it was the largest audience for the German national handball team at an indoor handball game. The game ended 30:26.

On April 22, 2006, Wladimir Klitschko and the American Chris Byrd met in a duel for the IBF and IBO World Heavyweight Championships. According to the stadium TV of the SAP Arena, it was the fastest sold-out boxing match in history, after just 48 hours all 14,000 tickets were sold. The first broadcast the fight and achieved a new boxing rating record with an audience rating of 47.8% (10.17 million viewers). For the first time, a boxing match from Germany was broadcast live in the USA with this broadcast. The fight was also seen in over 100 other countries.

From January 24, 2007 to January 28, 2007 the group games of the main round group 2 of the handball world championship 2007 took place in the SAP Arena on four match days . At the 2010 Ice Hockey World Championship , the hall acted as a venue alongside the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen and the Lanxess Arena in Cologne .

In February 2009 the Live Entertainment Award in the category Best Hall / Arena was given to the SAP Arena.

On November 28, 2012, the handball Bundesliga game Rhein-Neckar Löwen against THW Kiel (17:28) took place in the hall. This was the 800th event since it opened in September 2005 in the SAP Arena.

On May 14, 2015, the finale of the 10th season of Germany's Next Topmodel took place in the arena and was broadcast live on Pro7 . At about 9:30 p.m. the transmission was canceled and the hall evacuated because of a bomb threat. The subsequent search of a suspicious suitcase did not reveal a bomb.

The finals of the German volleyball cup have been taking place in the SAP Arena since 2016 . In March 2018, an agreement was reached that the cup finals would remain in the Mannheim Arena until 2020. Over 12,000 spectators came to the SAP Arena for the first event in 2016. This is a record for a volleyball game in Germany. The women's and men's finals again attracted over 11,000 visitors in 2017 and 2018. As part of the 2020 event, with 10,689 spectators, the extension of the expiring agreement until at least 2025 was announced.

The 10 millionth visitor to the arena was welcomed to the DEL ice hockey game between Adler Mannheim and Eisbären Berlin on January 22, 2017.

Location and directions

The arena is located in Bösfeld in the east of the city of Mannheim near the Neuhermsheim district, directly on the B 38a near the Mannheim motorway junction.

Trains of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn and some regional trains stop at the nearby Mannheim ARENA / Maimarkt stop . Some other passing trains also stop at events and special trains run.

In order to develop the arena in local traffic, the tram line 6 was also extended by two new sections. The northern arm (Neuostheim - Maimarktgelände - SAP Arena - SAP Arena S-Bahnhof) was put into operation when the arena opened. Since December 2006, the arena has also been accessible via the southern arm via the route ( Planetarium - Neuhermsheim - SAP Arena Sued - SAP Arena S-Bahnhof) by tram. Line 6 can operate as a ring line, but is divided into lines 6 and 6A at the planetarium in regular traffic, with line 6A serving the southern route via Neuhermsheim.
