The OWL Arena is a multifunctional arena with a closable roof in the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Halle (Westphalia) , East Westphalia-Lippe region .

history

The arena was built in 1992/93. Since 1993 a place in the arena Tennis Tournament of the ATP Tour on grass instead. The tournament was originally called the Gerry Weber Open and since 2019 the Noventi Open . In addition, events from the fields of sports, music and television take place in the arena all year round.

The audience capacity depends on the type of event and varies with the installation of a raised floor. For events on the zero level (concrete floor) of the arena, the visitor capacity is 11,500 people, with a built-in raised floor around 10,500 people. By installing two heating systems (infrared radiators, oil / gas heating), the arena can be used all year round. A catering area built for the 2007 handball world championship in 2006 surrounds three quarters of the arena on 2,000 square meters and is located below the spectator gallery. The stadium has a two-part roof that can be closed in 88 seconds.

The multi-purpose arena has been named OWL Arena since mid-January 2020 . An association of 13 sponsors so far is the new namesake. The sponsors, among them the football club Arminia Bielefeld , have committed themselves for five years to increase the attractiveness of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region (OWL).

Sports

In addition to the tennis tournament, the hall was u. a. Venue for Davis Cup home games (1993, 1994 and 2006), games of the German national handball team (including the 2007 World Cup) and the German volleyball cup final . In addition, several international basketball matches and World Cup boxing matches were held in the hall . From 2006 to 2015 the finals of the German volleyball cup took place in Halle.

Concerts

In addition to the sporting events, concerts are also held in the OWL Arena. So occurred u. a. José Carreras , Plácido Domingo , Luciano Pavarotti , José Cura and Anna Netrebko were guests in Halle, as were Rod Stewart , Andrea Bocelli , Whitney Houston , Eros Ramazzotti and Elton John . Artists such as Peter Maffay , Florian Silbereisen , André Rieu , Pur , Andrea Berg and Sarah Connor also performed in the arena several times. The hall also regularly serves as a TV production facility.
