The largest solar power system on a public building in Berlin is located on the roof of the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The 1064 installed photovoltaic modules with an area of 1749 m² can produce up to 250  kW of electricity. The annual yield is 220 MWh with an average duration of sunshine, which corresponds to the electricity requirements of around 110 households. The plant avoids 220 tons of carbon dioxide annually  . The Berlin Energy Agency (BEA) designed, financed and built the solar system and has been operating it for a total of 20 years since 2009.

Two-thirds of the hall is embedded in the ground, which means that it fits in well with the surrounding landscape. Green areas have been created around the hall and bee colonies have also been living in the hall since spring 2016 , operated by a beekeeper from the Stadtbiene e.V. V. 15 farm sheep were used to mow the lawn in the summer of 2019 . In 2002 the hall won the gold medal of the international IOC / IAKS competition for the world's best architecturally best and best-used halls, especially for their ecological design, and has been Green Globe certified since 2011. In the certification process, the solar system, the combined heat and power plant , the north-facing main glass facade and the architecture of the "Green Bridge" as a connection between the formerly separate halves of East and West Berlin as well as the connection to local public transport are particularly important .
