The 2000/01 season was the first in which four groups were played. The number of teams in the first division increased from 16 to 24. The two best teams in each group qualified for the quarter-finals, after which the final round of the last four was played as before. Somewhat surprisingly, the German champion was the southern second Red-White Munich , who won three times in extra time in the knockout round .
