The HC Heidelberg is a traditional hockey club and a founding member of both the field hockey Bundesliga and the indoor hockey Bundesliga . The club was founded on April 15, 1909 by graduates of the secondary school in the Kettengasse, who wanted to continue playing hockey after their school days. Hockey, introduced by the English at Heidelberg College in Heidelberg, had been officially adopted by schools since 1906. The square with artificial turf and clubhouse is located on Speyrer Strasse around 4 km southwest of the old town. The club celebrated its greatest successes with a German field championship in 1982 and an indoor championship in 1971 for the men.

Men's

For decades, the HCH provided one of the best men's teams in the country. At the first German championship in field hockey in 1937, the HCH came third behind the Berliner SC and ETUF Essen . Even after the Second World War , the club belonged to the German top. So you were a member of the field and indoor Bundesliga from the start . The highlight was the two German championships in the hall in 1971 and on the field in 1982. In the hall, the team was relegated from the Bundesliga in 1990 and went through a dry spell in the lower leagues until they were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1999 and a year later even the return to the Bundesliga. After being relegated from the elite league in 2002 and 2006, the 2nd Bundesliga was again the home of the men, just like field hockey. However, a lack of youth work and the quitting of some players meant that they even found themselves back in the major league in the meantime, before returning to the 2nd regional league in 2016, which was held in the last game in the following season.

Over time, the club posted a large number of players for the national team . A number of HCH players won Olympic gold: Hans Haußmann and Friedrich Horn bronze in Amsterdam in 1928 , Heinrich Peter silver in Berlin in 1936 , Michael Peter and Dieter Freise gold in Munich in 1972 and Michael Peter and Christian Bassemir silver in Los Angeles in 1984 .

In 1997, the A boys won the German indoor championship in the junior division. Clemens Arnold also emerged from the youth work under Rudi Sattel , who became world and European champion in the national team's goal.

Ladies

Women's hockey has been with HCH since 1919. The heyday of women was the 1960s with five finals at the German Indoor Championships. Well-known players at the time were the national players Inge and Helga Schleicher and Ute Faas. In the hall, the first women in the 06/07 season could not get promoted back to the regional league. The championship in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg allowed for promotion games against the 1st Hanauer THC , but both were lost. On the field in the 06/07 season the Regionalliga could not be held as penultimate, so that the HCH will compete in the Oberliga in the coming season. The greatest success in recent history was celebrated by female youth B with Dieter Freise with the German runner-up in the hall in 2003.
