Dieter Freise

Dieter Freise (born February 18, 1945 in Heidelberg ; † April 5, 2018 there ) was a German hockey player and Olympic champion.

Career

Dieter Freise was a son of the hockey player Günther Freise . Like his father, he played for HC Heidelberg . The full-back was German indoor hockey champion in 1971. In 1969 he made his debut in the German national hockey team . In 1970 he won the title at the first European championship. At the first field hockey world championship , which took place in Pakistan in 1971, Freise took fifth place with the German team. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Freise rose to the world class, with him the German team won the Olympic final against the world champion from Pakistan 1-0.

At the 1975 World Cup , the German team won bronze with Freise. The 1976 Olympic Games were rather disappointing , with the German team only finishing fifth. In February 1977 he said goodbye to 86 (73 in the field and 13 in the hall) internationals together with Fritz Schmidt , Michael Krause and Wolfgang Rott from the German national team. Freise won two German championship titles with HC Heidelberg, for which he was active in the Bundesliga until 1986: in 1971 in the hall and in 1982 on the field.

For winning the gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he received the silver laurel leaf on May 25, 1973 together with the German national hockey team . In 1976 Freise ended his international career to take over his parents' dental practice, which he ran until he retired in 2009. Nevertheless, he played for his club in the Bundesliga for another ten years. He then worked for many years as a youth coach at HC Heidelberg . With the female B-youth of HC Heidelberg he was third in the German championships in 2003. Then he ended his coaching career.

Dieter Freise died on April 5, 2018 and was buried in the Heidelberg Bergfriedhof .
