The 1st Men's Hockey World Championship took place in Barcelona from October 15 to 24, 1971 . The tournament was organized by the World Hockey Federation FIH . Originally the World Cup was supposed to take place in the Pakistani city of Lahore . However, safety issues were the decisive factor in choosing the Catalan capital as the venue for the title fights.

All 30 games were played in the sports complex of the Real Club de Polo .
