The 10th Men's Field Hockey World Championship was held from February 24 to March 9, 2002 at the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur . Originally the tournament should have taken place in Lahore . Due to the unclear security situation, due to the military operation of NATO in Afghanistan at the time, Pakistan did not see itself in a position to hold the title fights. Sixteen teams took part in the tournament, which were initially divided into two groups.
venue
The Malaysia National Hockey Stadium was the sole venue for the World Field Hockey Championship. It has a capacity of up to 12,000 spectators and was built in 1997.
qualification
The five continental champions were directly qualified
In addition, two teams qualified via the Olympic Games, namely Pakistan (4th) and England (6th). The Netherlands were also set as defending champions and hosts Malaysia.
The remaining participants were determined in a qualifying tournament which took place from July 17 to 29, 2002 in Edinburgh . Argentina, Spain, Poland, Belgium, India, Japan and New Zealand qualified.
