The 2nd men's hockey world championship was held from August 24, 1973 to September 2, 1973 in Amstelveen on natural grass. Twelve teams took part in the tournament, which were initially divided into two groups. There were two points for a win. The Netherlands became world champions for the first time after a 4-2 final win in the seven-meter shoot-out against India. Germany came third.
