The 11th women's field hockey world championship was held from September 27th to October 8th, 2006 in Madrid . The games took place on the premises of the Club de Campo . The official name of the tournament was Samsung World Cup Women . Twelve national teams competed against each other, first in two groups and then in placement games. A total of 42 international matches were completed.
The Netherlands became world champions for the sixth time , beating Australia 3-1 in the final .
Germany was represented by the German women 's national hockey team.
venue
The only venue for the women's field hockey world championship is the Club de Campo grounds in the Spanish capital, Madrid. There are two artificial turf pitches on the site , one of which has stands for spectators.

The five continental champions are eligible to participate.

In addition, the European runner-up and Olympic champion, Germany , and the host, Spain , are directly qualified.
The remaining five starting places were awarded by the qualifying tournament Samsung World Cup Qualifier 2006 , which took place from April 25th to May 6th 2006 in Rome . Here, qualified England , South Korea , Japan , USA and China for the tournament.
