history

In 1931 a group of young adults from the Madrid upper class founded the Real Club de Campo in the capital of Spain. In 1942 the club merged with the Real Sociedad Hípica Española (Royal Spanish Equestrian Society). Under pressure from the Madrid city administration (which, as the owner of the sports facilities, has a say), the sports facilities were modernized and expanded from 1984 onwards. Since 1993 the club has opened up to new disciplines. The Club de Campo hosted the men's field hockey championship in 1974 and the women's world championship in 2006, as well as the European show jumping championships in 2011 . Since 2011, the Club de Campo has hosted the ATP Challenger Madrid tennis tournaments and the ITF Women's Circuit Madrid, which is taking place at the same time.
