Individual European Champion 2011: Rolf-Göran Bengtsson with Ninja

The European Show Jumping Championships 2011 took place from September 13th to September 18th 2011 in Madrid .

It was the 31st European Show Jumping Championship , and medals in the team competition were only awarded for the 19th time.

organization

preparation

In April 2009 the FEI decided to award the European Championships to the Spanish capital, Madrid.

This is the second time that Spain has hosted the European Show Jumping Championships after Gijón in 1993.

Implementation, venue, media

The European Championships opened on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in the afternoon. The sporting program began on Wednesday and, in addition to the competitions of the European championship, also included an international show jumping tournament, advertised as CSI 3 *.

The event ended on Sunday (September 18, 2011) after the award ceremony. The event was held on the grounds of the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid , which regularly alternates with Gijón to host the Spanish Nations Cup tournament .

Especially for the European championships, the turf of the riding stadium was removed and replaced by an all-weather sandy floor. As a result, however, a lawn covering is to be produced again.

The European Championships were broadcast extensively on Eurosport on German-speaking television . The team decision was broadcast completely live on Thursday (around 4½ hours) and on Friday (almost 3 hours). The final of the individual evaluation was broadcast for about an hour as part of a summary. In addition, the FEI has transferred the European championship tests for a fee.

Competitions

General

The team and individual decision was carried out from Wednesday to Friday in joint tests. While the team decision was made on Friday, the individual European champion was only chosen on Sunday after another test.

A total of 67 riders competed at the European Championships in Madrid, 16 nations formed a team from this field. The participating nations were each allowed to send four show jumpers, each with one horse, to the European Championships.

Time schedule

The first partial test was the time jumping test on Wednesday. All riders participating in the European championships started in this test. Each team consisted of three or four riders from one nation, of which the three best results went into the team ranking.

After this test, the time achieved there (penalty points were converted into seconds in time jumping competitions) was converted into evaluation points. Here the leader was given 0.00 rating points. The following riders received their respective distance from the leader in hundredths of a second as evaluation points, but halved, rounded down to two places behind the decimal point. A rider who was placed 13 hundredths of a second behind the leader would have received 0.06 points.

The second test, a jumping competition with two rounds , was held on Thursday and Friday . On Friday only the best ten teams and the best 50 riders were allowed to participate (all team riders of the ten teams were qualified). After this test, the final team ranking was determined, based on which the team medals were awarded.

The best 25 participants after the second partial test were allowed to take part in the individual finals on Sunday, there was no restriction on the number of participants per nation. This final test was also held as a jumping competition with two rounds.

Results

Intermediate result after the first day

After the first test, France took the lead with just 2.95 points. The German team was in second place with 4.41 points. The teams from Sweden, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Belgium were behind with a gap of less than two throws (eight penalty points).

In the individual standings, as in the team standings, a Frenchman , Olivier Guillon, took the lead. Austrian Stefan Eder followed in second place . Another 26 riders followed at a distance from one drop to the leader.

Intermediate result after the second day

The course on the second day was a considerable challenge for many riders, there were many obstacle drops. The focus here was on the moat and a series of obstacles on the final line ( triple bar with a subsequent double combination).

The winner of the day was the Dutch team, who recorded three faultless rides and thus took the lead. They benefited from the mistakes of the previously leading French, who were distributed evenly across the team. The German team was still in second place, the Swiss in ninth place.

Austria was no longer in 13th place in the second round of the top ten teams. The team that started with only three riders recorded 49 penalty points. Stefan Eder, who slipped from second to 37th and was one of the biggest losers in the individual ranking, had his share in these losses.

In the individual competition, Carsten-Otto Nagel took the lead in the interim result after fourth place on the previous day and a zero round on Thursday. Olivier Guillon slipped to ninth place after a throw.

Intermediate result after the third day

On the third day of the evaluation, an identical course to the previous day was on the program. Here, however, the water was defused by a color scheme, so that there was no longer a focus of error. The Dutch team, which had dominated the day before, showed weaknesses. The teams from Germany and France benefit from this, both of which had three faultless rounds in the daily result.

For the German team, victory in the team competition was already certain after three riders with a total of four penalty points. Finally, Ludger Beerbaum, who had made mistakes at the moat the days before, was able to improve the team result to zero penalty points on Friday with his flawless lap.

In particular, with a clear round from Beat Mändli , the Swiss, who had started as the titleholders in these European championships, managed to finish sixth and thus the lack of qualification for the 2012 Summer Olympics . The teams from the Netherlands and Sweden that were not yet qualified also managed to do this. The Portuguese team, which finished tenth the day before, could not muster a team on Friday due to the failure of a team rider's horse.

In the still open individual competition, Carsten-Otto Nagel and Corradina continued to lead . Billy Twomey (second the day before) slipped to 18th place, and Gregory Wathelet fell from fourth to 20th with twelve penalty points on Friday.

Individual evaluation

On the final day of the European Championships there was a jumping competition with two different rounds to be mastered in the individual evaluation. Despite the possibility that if individual riders do not participate, others will join the group of the best 25, only 22 riders competed with their horses.

In the first lap, both Carsten-Otto Nagel (first in the intermediate ranking) and Nick Skelton (second in the intermediate ranking) each had a throw, so that the Dutchman Gerco Schröder, who remained clear here, took the lead. Janne-Friederike Meyer had two obstacle drops with Lambrasco and decided not to continue the test after the round.

The second round also brought about changes in the individual ranking. After Nagel and Skelton had to record four penalty points again, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson took the lead. Gerco Schröder was the last rider to start with a lead of over five points. Until shortly before the end of the course, Schröder had recorded a drop, which would have meant the gold medal. On the last jump, however, another pole fell, which cost Schröder (as part of the team decision on Friday) to win a medal. The individual European title went to Rolf-Göran Bengtsson with the 16-year-old gelding Ninja .

Only Jeroen Dubbeldam with Simon and Henrik von Eckermann with Coupe de Coeur remained clear in both rounds of the final day .
