Billy Twomey (born April 14, 1977 in Cork ) is an Irish show jumper.

At the beginning of 2012 he was one of the 20 best show jumpers in the world in the FEI rankings , making him the second most successful show jumper in Ireland.

Career

Billy Twomey grew up in Cork in the south of Ireland and learned to ride at an early age. In Ireland he won several show jumping titles as a youth. He later moved to the Netherlands, where he was trained by Albert Voorn . He subsequently moved to Great Britain, where he was trained by Michael Whitaker . Today he lives on the property of his sponsors, Sue and Eddie Davies, in Pewit Hall, Nantwich, Cheshire .

As a young rider he took part in the European Championships in his age group in 1997 and 1998. Twomey has been part of Irish Nations Cup teams for years, and in 2000 he was part of the shortlist for the Summer Olympics . In 2003 he took part in the European Championships in Donaueschingen with Luidam , followed in 2006 with Luidam in the World Equestrian Games in Aachen .

In April 2008 he lost his horse Pikap in a fall during a tournament in Grobbendonk . The stallion broke his leg and buried his rider under himself. As a result of the accident, the mold had to be put down. Twomey, who was unconscious for nearly three quarters of an hour after the fall, was admitted to hospital with a broken leg, broken ribs and head injuries and was given a six-month hiatus.

In 2010 he took part in the World Equestrian Games for the second time and achieved eleventh place in Lexington, his best individual placement at an international championship. With Tinka's Serenade he participated in the 2011 European Championships in Madrid .

Among his greatest successes include single addition to the victories in the CSI / CSIO 5 * -large prices of St. Gallen (2009) , Basel (2011) and Zurich (2011) , the victory of the World Top 10 Finals 2011.

In 2011 and 2014 Billy Twomey took part in the World Cup finals. In May 2016 he and Diaghilev became the first Irish rider since 1981 to win the German Jumping Derby .

Twomey is married and has three children.
