Michael Whitaker (born April 17, 1960 ) is a British show jumper .

Michael Whitaker lives in Nottingham and runs a tournament stable there.

Career

Whitaker started riding ponies at the age of seven, rode international tests for the first time at 16 and became the youngest ever winner of the famous Hickstead Derby at 20 .

In September 1993 he took over the leadership of the world rankings from his brother John Whitaker .

Whitaker is known for his sure instinct for difficult horses and for his economical riding style. Furthermore, he is probably the rider who is one of the record participants in European championships and world cup jumping.

In February 2012 he was ranked 24th in the show jumping world rankings.

Private

Whitaker has three children (Jack, Molly and Katie Jane) with ex-wife Veronique, but now lives with his new wife Melissa. His nephew William Whitaker lived and trained with him until the summer of 2010 , after a disagreement he moved to Shaw Stud Farms near Telford . Michael Whitaker's son Jack took part in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games .

Doping tests

In 2009 Whitaker was banned for four months because of a positive doping test on his horse Tackeray . The substance altrenogest was detected, which is classified as doping in stallions and geldings. Whitaker himself justified this with the fact that the feed bucket was probably confused with that of his mare Wonami van den Aart , whereby the substance found got into Tackeray's body (in mares, altrenogest, which leads to the suppression of the horses , is only classified as a medication for the tournament was approved by the tournament veterinarian to use this agent). In setting the ban, the FEI also looked at Whitaker's flawless career and the fact that he never tested positive on several hundred doping tests on his horse.

Due to a regulation of the British Olympic Association, it would have been blocked for all subsequent Olympic Games. He filed an objection against this, which was granted due to "considerable attenuating circumstances". Thus Whitaker would have been eligible to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London , ultimately he was reserve rider there and did not start.
