organization

Preparation and venue

During the general assembly of the FEI in November 2010, the venue for the European Dressage and Show Jumping Championships for 2013 was announced. The Danish city of Herning in Jutland applied successfully for this . In May 2011, the European Dressage Championships for riders with disabilities were also awarded to Herning.

The European Dressage Championships were held in Denmark for the fifth time in 2013. It was only for the second time that European championships in show jumping were determined in Denmark.

The largest venue for the European championships was the MCH-Arena , the football stadium in Herning. The European championship competitions in dressage and show jumping as well as supporting competitions in both disciplines were held there. The second venue was the neighboring Jyske Arena . This is where the handicapped riders' exams and other general show jumping exams took place.

Implementation and media

The main sponsor of the event was ecco . In addition, the championships of the individual sports had their respective title sponsors: PSI GmbH for jumping, the Danish Blue Hors stud for dressage and JYSK Holding for para-dressage .

On German-language television, Das Erste showed a one-hour broadcast of the show jumping competition on Saturday, SRF Zwei broadcast this decision for three hours. The ZDF showed a summary of the Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday. On Thursday, 90-minute live broadcasts of the team finals for the show jumping and dressage riders were broadcast on Eurosport . In addition, the FEI broadcast the tournament on its website for a fee.

Show jumping

General

Piergiorgio Bucci with Casallo Z , member of the Italian show jumping team at the 2013 European Championships

The first part of the show jumping test was a time jumping test on Tuesday. In this test, all show jumpers participating in the European championships started. Each team consisted of three or four riders from one nation, of which the three best results went into the team ranking.

After the time jumping test, the time achieved there (penalty points were converted into seconds for time jumping tests) were converted into evaluation points. Here the leader was given 0.00 rating points. The following riders received their respective distance from the leader in hundredths of a second as evaluation points, but halved, rounded down to two places behind the decimal point. Thus, a rider who was placed 13 hundredths of a second behind the leader would have received 0.06 points.

The team decision was made in the second test, a jumping competition with two rounds . This was carried out over two days (Wednesday and Thursday). On the second day of the test, only the best ten teams and the best 50 riders were allowed to take part (all team riders of the ten teams were qualified). After completing this test, the final team ranking was determined on the basis of which the team medals were awarded.

On Saturday afternoon, the 25 best participants started again after the second partial test. In this individual final, a jumping competition with two rounds, the decision was made in the individual evaluation.

A total of 78 show jumpers from 22 nations competed at the European Championships, 19 nations form a team from this field. The participating nations are allowed to send four show jumpers each with one horse to the European championships. Austria withdrew its show jumping team two weeks before the start of the European Championships, due to inexperienced or injured horses, they wanted to concentrate on the 2014 World Equestrian Games .

After the third day: final result of the team classification

The third day of the team decision brought the rankings up again. The loser of the day from the top group was the Swiss team, where all four riders had to accept penalty points, which meant that Switzerland slipped to fifth. The French team got four penalty points to their result, which ruined the chance of a medal. Sweden benefited from this and moved up to third without any further mistakes for the team result.

When the last rider in the test, Scott Brash, rode, the decision was made about the gold medal: the German team had fought their way from fourth to silver on the third day. Brash was the last British rider to allow a maximum of four penalty points. This is exactly what he succeeded in doing: with just one drop, he secured the European team championship for Great Britain.

Final result individual evaluation

On the last day of the European Show Jumping Championships, the 25 best riders of the previous interim ranking of the individual ranking competed again to determine the individual European champion. There were many mistakes in the first round of this final test, only two riders crossed the finish line without penalty points. Even the previously faultless Ben Maher had to accept four penalty points, which cost him the previously safe lead.

In the second round of the test, only 20 horse-rider pairs started, six participants waived. This second lap was also very demanding, four starters made no mistakes here, including the two leading so far. The Frenchman Roger-Yves Bost secured the European title with Myrtille Paulois , both of whom had only received one time penalty during their five rides at the European Championships. The best pair of starters of the day were Scott Brash and Sanctos , who were the only ones to show two clear rounds and thus worked their way up to the bronze rank.

Dressage riding

General

In the dressage, 65 riders from 19 nations compete. 14 of these nations have three or four riders in the starting field and can thus form a team.

The first test in dressage is also the decisive competition in the team classification: the Grand Prix de Dressage takes place on Wednesday and Thursday . All dressage riders participating in the European championships take part in this test. After up to four team riders per team, the European team champions will be determined on Thursday afternoon.

The best 30 participants in the Grand Prix de Dressage are entitled to take part in the second test, the Grand Prix Spécial . This test will be held on Friday. The individual medals of the Grand Prix Spécial are awarded on the basis of the results.

The last individual decision of the European Championships in Herning will be made on Sunday afternoon: The dressage riders who make it into the top 15 of the individual ranking of the Grand Prix Spécial take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle . If more than three riders from one or more nations make it into the top 15 of the Grand Prix Spécial, the lowest placed (fourth) rider of the respective nation is not allowed to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. For this purpose, a different rider moves up after the Grand Prix Spécial has been placed. In this test, the second set of individual medals will be awarded at these European championships.

Team ranking

On the first day of the Grand Prix de Dressage, the first two German team riders dominated. At first Fabienne Lütkemeier took the lead (73.237 percent) at her first championship after the young rider's time with D' Agostino, later this leadership was taken from her by Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH (75.213 percent).

In the third riders of the nations, the competition triumphed: Carl Hester and Uthopia achieved a result of 75.334 percent, Edward Gal and Undercover took a clear lead with 81.763 percent. Kristina Sprehe's horse Desperados FRH was impressed by the atmosphere of the stadium, both had individual weaknesses in the ride and came up with 75.061 percent.

The Dutch and British starters also showed strong laps in the fourth rider, with Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro even setting a new world record with 85.942 percent . With the ride of Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Digby , the Danish team was ahead of the German team in the intermediate ranking. This now had to step up with their last starter pair: Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill NRW mastered the pressure and came up with a result of 84.377 percent. With this result, the German team secured the team victory.

Individual classification: Grand Prix Spécial

In the Grand Prix Spécial, the medals went to the favored couples, but they all made clear mistakes in the dressage test: Shortly before the end of a very good ride, Helen Langehanenberg turned onto the diagonal instead of riding the long side at a strong trot as planned. Despite this mistake, she achieved 84.330 percent with Damon Hill NRW . After her, Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro came into the square. Both she and later Adelinde Cornelissen quarreled and started to alternate two people instead of riding gallop traversals as planned. Despite these mistakes, it was enough for all three riders to win an individual medal.

Edward Gal and Undercover , who had shown a strong performance the day before, botched the start of their test, the greeting line-up was given grades from 3.0 to 5.5 by the judges. During the test, the couple improved significantly, a piaffe was awarded a maximum score of 10.0 by five out of seven judges. In the end, this meant just under 80 percent and thus fourth place. Kristina Sprehe followed in fifth place, with Desperados FRH showing a stronger lap than the day before and receiving 79.345 percent. Isabell Werth and Don Johnson FRH showed themselves to be significantly weaker than in the Grand Prix . They came in 20th place and are therefore not qualified for the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Dressage for riders with disabilities

General

The starting field for the dressage of riders with disabilities comprised 59 riders from 19 nations.

The program of para dressage riders began with the team test, which was held on Wednesday and Thursday. This formed the first of two tests in the team classification. The team evaluation follows a complex set of rules in order to make the performance of the participants with different degrees of disability comparable. A team consists of up to four riders per nation, with the three best results being included in the rating. At least one rider per team must be assigned to Grade Ia , Ib or Grade II . In addition, the rule was that no more than three riders per team were allowed to belong to one grade. In the team classification, specific, fixed tasks are ridden for each grade.

The championship test was held on Friday and Saturday. This was the first individual test and at the same time the second partial test of the team evaluation. The second individual evaluation was the freestyle, which took place on Saturday afternoon. In the freestyle, the riders put together the prescribed lessons individually for an examination. Two individual European champions were determined per grade, one in the championship test and one in the freestyle. So, including the team competition, a total of eleven sets of medals were awarded.
