Elke Philipp

Elke Philipp (* 4. February 1964 as Elke Spiegl ) is a German rider. Since 2010 she has started as a dressage rider in equestrian sports for the disabled . Before that, she competed in alpine skiing as a winter athlete .

Illness and professional career

At the age of 20 Elke Philipp fell ill with meningitis and cerebellar inflammation (viral meningitis and cerebellar meningoencephalitis ). Since this was recognized too late, the brain was so badly damaged that Philipp was spastically paralyzed on the left side and is unstable in the trunk. She is dependent on walking sticks, a permanent tracheotomy allows her greater efforts.

After one and a half years in the hospital and several rehabilitation measures , Elke Philipp began training as a medical-technical laboratory assistant . After completing her apprenticeship, she worked at the Höhenried Clinic in Bernried on Lake Starnberg . She also studied large-scale laboratory management.

In 2002 she met her future husband, and they married three years later. Both live together in Treuchtlingen in the Altmühltal .

Elke Philipp had already practiced athletics before she fell ill . From 1992 she received hippotherapy for therapeutic reasons . During this time she manages to get off the wheelchair and walk with canes. From 1994 she took riding lessons, three years later she received a riding participation .

At the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, however, her sporting focus was on winter sports, she was twice German champion in alpine sports for the disabled (Alpine skiing). In the 2001 European Cup final in Wolfsberg- St. Stefan , she came fifth in the giant slalom. In the overall Europeancup she came fourth. Because of these successes, Elke Philipp was scheduled to take part in the Winter Paralympics 2002 , but could not find a sponsor for participation. After getting to know her future husband, she withdrew from active sports.

In 2005 Elke Philipp bought her first horse, the brown gelding Rousseau G , and took riding lessons again. Five years later she took part in a horse show for the first time in Nörten-Hardenberg . Philipp is assigned to competition class Grade I (until 2016 referred to as Grade Ia) in para dressage . The most severely disabled riders compete in this class; there are only lessons in the step.

In the same year she gave her nomination for the German championships of dressage riders with handicaps, which were held in Bochum that year. In the German championship of Grade I riders, she won the bronze medal here. In July 2010 she became the Bavarian Champion Munich of the Grade I rider. In the following year she won the silver medal with Rousseau G in the German championship in competition class I.

For Philipp's further development in equestrian sport, the black gelding Regaliz was acquired in 2012, which is better suited to the special requirements of disabled sports . With this Elke Philipp won the German title of Grade I rider from 2013 to 2016. She took part in the European and World Championships with him in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and was part of the German team that won the team medal. At the Maimarkt tournament in Mannheim she was part of the victorious German team at the 2014 German Para Dressage Riders' Cup, which was held for the first time. In the following two years, too, Germany won here with Elke Philipp and Regaliz participating .

In 2016, Philipp and Regaliz belonged to the five riders strong German team of para dressage riders at the 2016 Summer Paralympics . She won the silver medal with the Olympic dressage team and was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 1, 2016. At the 2017 European Championships , she was the most successful German participant by winning two medals.
