The Hanoverian is a riding horse breed that is numerically one of the strongest warmblood breeds in the world. In the past decades, the Hannoveraner Verband e. V. thanks to the sporting successes registered and analyzed by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) of its representatives on the most successful riding horse breeds in the disciplines of jumping , dressage and eventing .

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The Hanoverian is a typical modern sport horse in a rectangular format (longer than high). The breeding goal is quite comprehensive:

“The Hanoverian is bred as a breed with particular aptitude for equestrian sport. The aim is for horses that are ideal performance and leisure horses due to their internal characteristics, rideability, external appearance, movement, jumping ability and health.

  • On this basis, the aim is to breed horses with a focus on one of the disciplines of dressage, jumping or eventing.
  • With the above-mentioned properties, the aim is also to breed horses that also have qualities for driving.
  • This breeding goal also offers every single breeder enough leeway to implement their own ideas. "
- Hanoverian Association

There is a range of different types, ranging from the tough, blood-streaked horse to the so-called commander horse (particularly large-framed, stocky type). The aim is to measure around 165 cm.

The Hanoverian foal brandy

interior

The Hanoverian is characterized by his excellent gait , which predestines him for great sport. He can be used in dressage, jumping and eventing at the highest level and is considered docile, attentive, balanced, but also spirited. He is also suitable as a driving, hunting and leisure horse.

Breeding history

The Hanoverian breed can be traced back to the 16th century. The Hanoverian was bred for agriculture and military service. Today's breeding is based on the establishment of the Celle State Stud on July 27, 1735, when the central registration of coverings and foaling reports was introduced. At the beginning of the 19th century, thoroughbred and English half-breed stallions were increasingly used to refine the "Hanoverian horse". After 1870, breeding was consolidated, taking into account the native tribes, with the Hanoverian being the most suitable for carriage and military use. During this time the Hanoverian Stud Book was founded in 1888, the predecessor of the Hanoverian Association.

A characteristic of Hanoverian breeding was the priority keeping of broodmares by peasant breeders, supported by the Lower Saxony State Stud in Celle and its breeding stations. Up until the early post-war period, a type of horse that could be used in all aspects of agriculture was the focus of breeding. After the extensive mechanization of agriculture, breeding was converted to the new sport type, mainly through the use of thoroughbreds and Trakehners as refiners. The Hanoverian breed was the "trendsetter" for the rest of the German warmblood breed . In 2005 the Association of Hessian Horse Breeders merged with the Hanoverian Association. In 2014, the merger with Department A of the Rhenish Horse Studbook followed .

Was one of the outstanding Hanoverian dressage stallions in recent years, born 1984 Stallion Weltmeyer of World Cup I from the state premium mare Anka , who until his death in 2011 the property of the Celle State Stud was. World Meyer in 1986 and 1987 Verden Körungssieger in Bundeschampion the three years of riding horses . At the stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf in the same year , he achieved an index of 143.96. In 1998 he was awarded the title “Hanoverian Stallion of the Year”. Of Weltmeyer's male offspring, 86 were licensed for Hanover, while his daughters received the state premium in 445 cases. His son Wolkentanz passed on his qualities and became Bundeschampion in 1996.

The state sire Stakkato von Spartan out of Pia is one of the most successful show jumping sires of the past few years . He was licensed in Verden and completed his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf in 1995 with the best jumping index of 144.39 points. Three years later, Stakkato and Eva Bitter became Bundeschampion of German show jumpers in Warendorf. Numerous international successes followed, five times he competed in Nations Cups for Germany. In 2003 he helped his rider in Gera to the title of German Champion. In 2007 he was awarded the title “Hanoverian Stallion of the Year”. Forty-four of his sons were chosen for Hanover; 81 daughters are state premium mares. In September 2012, at the age of 19, Stakkato was retired from sport on the occasion of the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf.

Hanoverian dam lines

The mare lines have a special meaning in horse breeding. Mares from well-bred, inheritable lines, some of which have been owned by breeders for several generations, are very valuable and a prerequisite for successful breeding. “Breeding means thinking in terms of generations” is an old saying not only in horse breeding.

In 2010 the Hanoverian Association developed a system for the mare lines in which all broodmares that were registered in a section of the stud book in 2006 were traced back to the respective parent mare. The basis was the first volume of the Hanoverian stud book from 1888. 1,548 mare lines of Hanoverian origin could be identified, which were divided into five regions according to the origin of their parent mare.

Tribe names were given. The parent name is basically the name of the parent mare, i.e. the mare entered for the first time in a Hanoverian stud book. In addition to the stock number, which is made up of the region of origin and year of birth of the stock mares, and the name, the owner of the stock mare is given at the time of entry with name, place of residence and district. The master information is printed in the equine passports of Hanoverians from 2010.

Breeding association

The headquarters of the Hanoverian Association is in Verden . There all data and information are collected in the stud books and equine passports are issued. Numerous seminars offer further information for anyone interested. The large events of licensing , tournaments , mare shows and auctions also take place on the premises of the Niedersachsenhalle .

Verden Auctions

Auction in the Niedersachsenhalle in Verden

The Hanoverian Association has been holding riding horse auctions in Verden since 1949. Eight sales events are now taking place in the Niedersachsenhalle, which was modernized in 2011/2012. Foals , broodmares , stallions and riding horses are sold at the auctions . Around 900 Hanoverians a year find a new owner. The horses are selected on selection dates throughout the breeding area. Official auction training begins ten days before the auctions. During this time, public training takes place and the horses can be ridden by interested parties. There are a total of six sales events for riding horses, an auction for foals and broodmares, and the stallion licensing followed by a stallion market. Horses for top sport are sold as well as leisure horses for all disciplines and for all demands.

The auction year begins with the Verden auction in January, followed by the Verden auctions in March, May and July. The range of riding horses is supplemented by foals. The elite foal and broodmares auction takes place in August, at which around 150 foals and 40 broodmares are auctioned.

The auction starts in autumn with the elite auction in mid-October. One of the highlights of the year is the stallion licensing and the subsequent stallion market. Two-and-a-half-year-old stallions that were previously selected from the entire breeding area apply for admission to breeding. Most of them are then publicly auctioned on the stallion market. The end of the year in Verden is the Verden auction in November, at which around 100 riding horses are sold. The last auction of the year is organized by the Hanoverian Association in Alsfeld with the so-called "Alsfeld Advent".

At the elite auction in autumn 2011, the top bid for the horse Lemony's Nicket v. Londonderry from the St.Pr.St. Wild Flower v. Weltmeyer at 900,000 euros. The three-year-old stallion won the Bundeschampionat for German Riding Horses in Warendorf and was awarded a premium stallion at his licensing. A buyer from the United States won the bid for the dark bay, which remained in Germany as a breeding stallion.

Hanoverian Friends' Association FRH

Gotha FRH and Ludger Beerbaum

The "Association for the Promotion of Equestrian Sports on Hanoverian Horses", FRH for short, was founded in 1985. Its aim is to support Hanoverians for sport and breeding. Horses with a sporting future should be tied to talented and successful riders. Highly talented Hanoverians with championship quality are purposefully acquired, promoted or retained for top-class sport.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012, two FRH horses were among the German medal winners. In the square won Desperados FRH v. De Niro / Wolkenstein II and Kristina Sprehe team silver. To the team's Olympic victory in eventing, FRH Butts Abraxxas v. Heraldik xx / Kronenkranich xx and Ingrid Klimke .
