Matthew Ryan , OAM , (born June 3, 1964 in Sydney ) is a former Australian eventing rider and horse breeder . With three Olympic gold medals, he is one of the most successful in his sport.

The youngest of four brothers started riding at the age of four. In 1984 he moved to the UK and was trained by three-time Olympic champion Richard Meade for a year . After he returned to Australia in 1985, he worked with his second oldest brother Simon on their parents' sheep farm . From 1987 he lived with his eldest brother Heath and his wife in the equestrian center of the state of New South Wales . At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , he was a substitute rider, but was not used.

With the horse Kibah Tic Toc , Ryan became the first Australian to win the gold medal both individually and with the team at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . Four years later he was again one of the favorites, but since both horses with which he had qualified were injured a few days before the competition, he had to forego a start in Atlanta . At the 2000 Summer Olympics in his hometown of Sydney, Ryan was Olympic champion for the third time (in the team classification with the horse Kibah Sandstone ). Four years later in Athens he was a substitute rider. In September 2013 he announced the end of his career as a rider, in the future he would like to concentrate on training, teaching and media work.

Matthew Ryan is married and has lived near Abergavenny in southeast Wales since 1989 , where he runs a stud farm .
