Italy took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with a delegation of 168 athletes (157 men and 11 women) in 91 competitions in 18 sports.

The Italian athletes won ten gold, ten silver and seven bronze medals, which put Italy in fifth place in the medal table. Olympic champions were the athlete Abdon Pamich in the 50 km walk, the marksman Ennio Mattarelli in the trap, the gymnast Franco Menichelli on the ground, the boxers Fernando Atzori in the flyweight and Cosimo Pinto in the light heavyweight, the cyclist Giovanni Pettenella in the track sprint, Mario Zanin in the road race and Sergio Bianchetto and Angelo Damiano in the track tandem sprint, as well as the eventing rider Mauro Checcoli in the individual and Paolo Angioni , Mauro Checcoli and Giuseppe Ravano in the team classification. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the fencer Giuseppe Delfino .
