Italy took part in the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens with an athlete. The only representative was the civil engineer Giuseppe Rivabella, who was based in Athens for professional reasons.
A second Italian athlete was present in Athens, the marathon runner Carlo Airoldi . He had walked most of the way between Milan and Athens. There he was not admitted to the games, as he had received prize money in a race from Milan to Barcelona and was therefore no longer considered an amateur.
Along with three other participating countries, Italy remained without a medal.
