Italy hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics . In Rome , a delegation of 280 athletes (246 men and 34 women) started in 138 competitions in 19 sports. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was, as four years earlier, the fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti . He could again win two medals, but only in the team competitions. The most successful Olympians for the host nation were fencer Giuseppe Delfino and cyclist Sante Gaiardoni , both of whom won two gold medals. With a total of 36 medals, Italy took third place in the medal table.
