The Soviet Union took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome with a delegation of 283 athletes (233 men and 50 women) in 145 competitions in 17 sports.

The Soviet athletes won 43 gold, 29 silver and 31 bronze medals, with the Soviet Union taking first place in the medal table. The most successful athlete was the gymnast Boris Schachlin , who won seven medals and was a four-time Olympic champion . The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was weightlifter Yuri Vlasov .
