Remarks

In the Caracalla thermal baths, the floor exercise facility was built in the middle, the other equipment was placed around the outside. All devices were protected from direct sunlight by sheets of canvas, and the grandstands offered 5300 spectators.

In the run-up to the Games, the International Olympic Committee had strived to only award medals for independent competitions. In gymnastics, this meant that from 1960 onwards the all-around event also qualified for the apparatus finals. The team evaluation and the individual evaluation in the all-around competition were held together. A formal separation was that individual gymnasts without a team could also be included in the all-around competition.

The competitions were partially affected by the fact that the judges gave very nationality-related ratings. Especially in the uneven bars, the Japanese Keiko Ikeda was so badly disadvantaged by the Soviet judge that she only achieved fifth place. In the men's category, the Japanese won the team standings for the first time, but their best individual gymnast Ono failed in the all-around competition with the smallest possible deficit of 0.05 points to Boris Schachlin. For women, the Soviet gymnasts continued to be superior.

Results men

The team and individual competitions were held on September 5th and 7th. The results on the individual devices counted as qualifications for the device finals on September 10th.
