Takashi Ono ( Japanese 小野 喬 , Ono Takashi ; born July 26, 1931 in Noshiro ) is a former Japanese artistic gymnast . With five gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals, he is one of the most successful athletes at the Olympic Games.

Career

At the Olympic Games in 1952 , he won his first Olympic medal in horse jumping. Four years later in Melbourne he won the first ever Olympic gold medal for a Japanese gymnast on the horizontal bar. In the twelve fight he won silver with the smallest possible deficit of 0.05 points on Viktor Tschukarin .

In Rome in 1960 he won on the horizontal bar and in the horse jump. As the strongest individual gymnast in the Japanese squad, he played a decisive role in Japan winning the Olympic team championship for the first time. In the twelve fight he again won silver and was again 0.05 points behind the winner Boris Schachlin .

The 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo marked the end of Ono's successful career. He took the Olympic oath at the opening ceremony . With the team he won another Olympic gold medal.

He is married to Kiyoko Ono , who also took part in the Tokyo Olympic Games as an artistic gymnast. In 1998 Takashi Ono was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame .
