Mikhail Yakovlevich Voronin
Mikhail Jakowlewitsch Voronin ( Russian Михаил Яковлевич Воронин , scientific transliteration Michail Jakovlevič Voronin ; born March 26, 1945 in Moscow ; † May 22, 2004 ibid) was a Soviet gymnast . He was considered one of the best gymnasts of the 1960s.
Voronin became all-around world champion in 1966 and European all-around champion in 1967 and 1968. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he was second in the all-around and Olympic champion on horizontal bar and jumping. Named after him as the Voronin rim , the giant rim with straight arms on the rings.
Voronin was married to Sinaida Voronina , a gymnast and Olympic champion in 1968, with whom he had a son Dmitrij (* 1969). The couple separated two years after their son was born. Because of Voronina's alcoholic illness, Mikhail Voronin received custody after the divorce (1980).
Voronin died in 2004 at the age of 59 from complications from cancer . He was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2010 .
