Alexei Nemov ( Russian Алексей Юрьевич Немов * 28. May 1976 in Baraschewo , Mordovia , USSR ) is a former Russian gymnast . He was four times Olympic champion and won five world titles.
Life
Nemov grew up in Tolyatti , where he started gymnastics at the age of six. At the age of fourteen he was accepted into the Soviet junior squad and trained from then on in the national training center at the "Round Lake" near Moscow .
His first international appearance in the seniors Nemow had at the World Championships in 1993 in Birmingham, where he finished fifth on the floor . He showed his first title at the 1995 World Championships in Sabae jump win.
At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he was Olympic champion with the team and on vault, but narrowly missed winning the all-around event and had to admit defeat to the Chinese Li Xiaoshuang . Nevertheless, he not only became the crowd's favorite at the Olympic gymnastics competitions, but also the most successful gymnast at the Games with six medals.
After a shoulder operation in 1997, he was initially unable to do gymnastics on the rings without any problems . All the more he surprised at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , where he was able to win six medals again, including the gold medals in the individual all-around and on the horizontal bar .
He was unable to defend both titles at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . Although he was in the bar finals, he was only fifth there. The only mistake Nemow made visible to the audience was a lunge after landing the exit. This led to a minute-long whistle concert in the hall until Nemow calmed the audience down. Although his rating was corrected by the main referee from 9.725 to 9.762 points, this was not enough to win a medal. Nemov himself did not criticize the jury in public.
After the 2004 Olympics, Nemov ended his active career.
Nemov is married and has one son.
