Akinori Nakayama, 1966

Akinori Nakayama ( Japanese中山 彰 規Nakayama Akinori ; born March 1, 1943 in Aichi Prefecture ) is a former Japanese artistic gymnast . He took part in the Olympic Games in Mexico (1968) and Munich (1972) and won six gold medals. On May 21, 2005, he was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame .

Sporting successes

Akinori Nakayama was the most successful male competitor in the 1968 Olympic Games . Overall, he won six gold, two silver and two bronze medals (10 medals) at the Olympics. This puts him in 18th place in the all-time best list of the Summer Olympics and is the most successful Asian athlete at the Games after his compatriot Sawao Katō (as of 2013). In addition to his Olympic successes, he was world champion seven times.
