Holger Behrendt

Holger Behrendt (born January 29, 1964 in Schönebeck ) is a former gymnast from the GDR, who became Olympic gold medalist in the rings in 1988.

Life

Behrendt started at TZ Schönebeck and later switched to ASK Vorwärts Potsdam . Behrendt was a student of Bernd Jäger , whose Jäger-Salto Behrendt showed to perfection. As an innovation, Behrendt was the first gymnast on the horizontal bar to show a combination of Kovacs somersaults and Deltschew somersaults in direct succession.

In 1984 Behrendt was the first time GDR champion on the rings. In 1985 he finished eighth in the all-around competition at the World Championships, in 1987 he finished sixth. At the Olympic Games in 1988 Behrendt could not qualify for the all-around final. For this he won two medals in individual finals, on the rings he shared the Olympic victory with Dmitri Bilosertschew . He was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold for his sporting success at the Olympic Games .

After his career, Behrendt worked as a gymnastics trainer at SC Cottbus .

In the all-around competition, Behrendt was runner-up in the GDR in 1982 and 1985. In 1984, 1987 and 1988 he took third place.
