Life

Arthur Zanetti is the son of Arquimedes Zanetti and his wife Roseane and grew up with a brother. He started gymnastics in 1997. Six years later he devoted himself to his first international competitions. In 2007 Zanetti was appointed to the Brazilian senior gymnastics team.

Internationally, Zanetti first appeared at the 2007 World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart . With the Brazilian team around Diego Hypólito , he did not get beyond a 17th place. Zanetti also did not reach a device finale. He did best with 57th place on the rings (14,750 points). On the ground he reached an 82nd place (14,500 points), in the all-around a 225th place (44,500 points). In April 2008 Zanetti appeared at the World Cup in Maribor , where he took third place in floor exercise with a victory of Ievgenii Bogonosiuk (15,400 points) from Ukraine with a score of 15,000. In the same place he reached sixth place with 15.375 points on the rings (winner: Yuri van Gelder , 16.675 points).

In the following years Zanetti developed into a specialist in ring gymnastics. At the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships in London , he was able to qualify for the finals in this discipline for the first time. There he missed a medal in the victory of the Chinese Yan Mingyong (15.675 points) with 15.325 points and finished fourth together with the Romanian George Stănescu . With the Brazilian team, Zanetti reached a 13th place in the team competition. In November of the same year he finished fourth on his parade machine at the World Cup in Osijek, Croatia . At the following World Cup in Stuttgart a few days later, Zanetti only had to admit defeat to the reigning Olympic champion Chen Yibing from China and won silver. In May 2010, the Brazilian appeared at the World Cup in Moscow , where he finished sixth on the ground and sixth on the rings. He had previously achieved fourth place on the rings at the International Tournament in Paris .

2011 had been Zanetti's most successful year by then. At the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen , China , he won the gold medal on the rings. The greatest success so far in his favorite discipline followed just under two months later at the World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo . After 13th place with the team, Zanetti achieved second place in the rings pre-fight with 15.533 points, making it the youngest gymnast in the apparatus finals. There he managed to improve to 15,600 points and, behind Chen Yibing (15,800) with silver, he won his first World Championship medal on his special device. At the following Pan American Games in Guadalajara , Mexico , Zanetti had to be beaten by the rings to the American Brandon Wynn and won silver.

In the 2012 Olympic year, Zanetti presented himself as strong as never before on the rings. He won the pre-Olympic test competition in London in January as well as the gymnastics world cups in Osijek (April), Maribor and Ghent (both in June). In preparation for the season highlight, he worked with his own small team consisting of his trainer, a physiotherapist and a sports psychologist. Accompanied by his family at the 2012 Summer Olympics , Zanetti reached the final of the ring in fourth place (15.616 points) after the preliminary fight. As the last participant in the final doing his exercise, he narrowly defeated the favored defending champion Chen Yibing (15,800) with 15,900 points, who had already won the qualification and was the first to go into the final. The victory was decided by Zanetti's better posture marks, although Yibing's exercise had been rated with a higher degree of difficulty of 0.3 points. It was the first Olympic medal from a gymnast from South America. “I really wanted to win this medal. And not just for me, but for gymnastics, for all clubs, so that all of Brazil can open its doors. I expect gymnastics to change now, because it has to change, ” said Zanetti after his Olympic victory.

At the Summer Universiade 2013 in Kazan, Zanetti was able to successfully defend his title and clearly won with 15.875 points ahead of Denis Ablyazin from Russia (15.550 points) and Ihor Radiwilow from Ukraine (15.525 points). At the beginning of October of the same year he succeeded in winning the title on the rings for the first time at the World Championships in Antwerp .

Arthur Zanetti lives in São Bernardo do Campo and is a student. He is a member of the Serc Santa Maria Club and is trained by Marcos Gotto.
