Yuri van Gelder (born April 20, 1983 in Waalwijk , Netherlands ) is a Dutch gymnast. His special device are the rings. On this he became world champion in 2005, he was also able to achieve three European championships on this device. In 2005 he was voted Sportsman of the Year (Netherlands) .

Born in Waalwijk ( North Brabant ), Yuri started gymnastics at the age of five . In 1997 he was accepted into the national team.

Sports career

In Anaheim he took part in the gymnastics world championships (apparatus gymnastics) for the first time , but only did gymnastics on the rings and therefore only reached the 316th place. At the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne, Australia, he became the first Dutch gymnastics world champion since 1903. With 9.725 points, he won the final on the rings in front of the Russian Alexander Safoshkin and the Italian Matteo Morandi. In the following years he was able to win the title several times on his special machine at the European level, and at least twice on the international level. Due to his success on the rings, he earned the nickname "Lord of the Rings".

Substance abuse

On July 13, 2009, he admitted that he had used cocaine three days before the Dutch Championships in Rotterdam . Van Gelder said that he regretted this slip and called himself "incredibly stupid". As a result, he was expelled from the Dutch Gymnastics Federation, and he was dismissed by his employer, the Dutch Army . During his suspension, the Russian-Dutch coach Boris Orlov continued to work with Van Gelder.

Olympic Games in Rio and London

Yuri van Gelder was admitted to qualify for the Summer Olympics in London , but could not qualify for this. With a view to the Summer Olympics in Rio 2016, he continued to train, especially on the rings. In fact, he managed to secure a starting place with the national team. During the Olympic Games, he was able to qualify as a replacement for the injured Frenchman Samir Aït Saïd for the ring final, but was withdrawn from the competition by his NOK because he broke the team's rules with a booze after successful qualification.
