Li Ning ( Chinese  李寧  /  李宁 , Pinyin Lǐ Níng ; born September 8, 1963 in Liuzhou , Guangxi ) is a former Chinese gymnast and current entrepreneur .

Life

Li Ning was born into a Zhuang family, he is the son of a Chinese music teacher and should also follow his father's profession at first . Li Ning first came into contact with gymnastics while suffering from a vocal cord injury . At the age of eight he was accepted by the Guangxi Autonomous Region gymnastics team.

In 1982 he was nicknamed "Prince of Gymnastics" after his success at the sixth World Cup Gymnastics Competition. At this tournament in Zagreb he had won gold in six disciplines. He won the individual all-around, won on the floor, on the horizontal bar, on the pommel horse, on the rings and in the jump. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he won six medals, three times gold (floor, horizontal bar, rings), twice silver (horse, team) and once bronze (all-around).

At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , he could no longer meet the high expectations and did not win a medal. He ended his sports career and was deported to a lemonade factory.

In 1990, he founded Li Ning Company Limited , a company named after him that manufactures sporting goods. He used his international contacts and initially produced for the market leaders Adidas and Nike . Later, Li Ning Co. Ltd. partly also produced by other manufacturers.

In 2000, Li Ning was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame . At the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games on August 8, 2008 in Beijing, Li was the last runner of the Olympic torch relay and lit the Olympic flame hanging from a steel cable structure on the inner roof edge of the national stadium . Before that, Li wanted to equip all referees and IOC officials with his clothing, but he could not prevail against long-time IOC outfitter Adidas. Instead, all employees of the Chinese state television CCTV as well as the Spanish and Swedish national teams wore his clothes.

Li studied law at Peking University's School of Law ( BA ) and completed a second degree at Peking University's Guanghua School of Management with an MBA .
