Zsolt Borkai (born August 31, 1965 in Győr ) is a Hungarian gymnast and politician ( Fidesz , independent since October 2019 ). On the pommel horse , he became world champion in 1987 and Olympic champion in 1988 . From 2006 to 2019 he was mayor of Győr.

Life

In 1987 he won the gold medal on the pommel horse at the World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam . On the horizontal bar, he classified himself in 3rd place.

He then took part in the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 and won the gold medal on the pommel horse together with Lyubomir Geraskow and Dmitri Bilosertschew . All three gymnasts received a grade of 19,950.

From 2010 to 2017 he was President of the Hungarian National Olympic Committee .

In the local elections in 2006, Borkai ran for Fidesz and KDNP as mayor of Györ, his hometown, and was elected with 49.53 percent of the vote. He was re-elected three times in 2010, 2014 and 2019. In the local elections in October 2019, however, his lead had shrunk to 646 votes or one and a half percentage points. The week before the election, an anonymous blogger posted a video showing the married mayor on a yacht in the Adriatic having an orgy with prostitutes. He also accused Borkai and those around him of corruption. Observers estimated the incident could have negatively impacted Fidesz election results across the country.

Two days after his re-election, Borkai announced that he had left Fidesz and would initially continue to serve as independent mayor. In November 2019, he announced his resignation.
