Viktor Chukarin ( Ukrainian Віктор Чукарін , Russian Виктор Иванович Чукарин ; in the German press as Viktor Schu Karin * denotes 9. November 1921 in Mariupol , † 25. August 1984 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR was a) Soviet gymnast . He was interned for several years as a Soviet prisoner of war in the main camp XB near Sandbostel . He died at the age of 62 in Lviv and was buried there in the Lychakiv Cemetery.
Career
At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , the first in which the Soviet Union took part, and in Melbourne in 1956 , he was the most successful male participant, aged 30 and 35, respectively. In addition to the Italian Alberto Braglia (1908 and 1912) and the Japanese Sawao Kato (1968 and 1972) and Kōhei Uchimura (2012 and 2016), he is one of the four athletes who were able to repeat their all-round victory. This, and especially his war experiences, made him a symbolic figure in Soviet sports.
In total, Tschukarin won seven gold, three silver and one bronze (eleven medals) at the Olympics. This puts him in 14th place in the all-time best list of all participants of both sexes (only men: 10th place), in the Soviet gymnastics category just behind Nikolai Jefimowitsch Andrianow and Boris Anfijanowitsch Schachlin , who also achieved seven Olympic victories but more silver and bronze ranks. (Last updated 2012)
In addition, he became world champion in the twelve fight and parallel bars in 1954 .
In 2009 Viktor Tschukarin was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame .
