China Central Television ( Chinese  中国 中央 电视台 , Pinyin Zhōngguó Zhōngyāng Diànshìtái , German "Chinese Central Television"), often abbreviated to CCTV , is the largest television station in the People's Republic of China . Organizationally, it is part of the Ministry of Radio , Television and Film of the People's Republic and as such has a journalistic dependence on the government .

program

The news coverage follows the guidelines of the propaganda department of the Communist Party of China . In the 1990s, like many other media companies in China, government subsidies were cut massively. In terms of programming, this leads to a balancing act between the line prescribed by the state and a program selection that can survive on the free market in the competition for viewers and advertising revenue. In the search for viewers, CCTV competes with local, also state-run broadcasters who have joined together to form larger media groups in order to be able to survive against CCTV.

history

CCTV began broadcasting for the first time on September 2, 1958 under the name Beijing TV , after the first successful experimental broadcasts on May 1 of the same year. The name was changed to CCTV on May 1, 1978.

On February 9, 2012, China Central Television launched a new channel, CCTV America , broadcasting from Washington, DC, which is expected to rival other international news channels.

CCTV reception

CCTV offers 16 programs and thus competes not only with other local broadcasters, but also with the foreign broadcasters that can be received via satellite . Most of the programs are named with a sequential number without any further description (for example: CCTV-1 , CCTV-2 etc.).

Outside of China, only CCTV-4 (“Overseas Channel”), CCTV-9 (English-speaking), CCTV-News (English-speaking) and CCTV-E & F (Spanish- and French-speaking) can be received via Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB ) be transmitted. They can be received via many satellites worldwide. Internet services such as PPLive also broadcast the program via the Internet. The programs can also be received unofficially via Livestation , where the live streams have been added by users. CCTV recently switched to DVB , not only because of the better signal quality, but also to be able to charge fees of around $ 10 a year.

In 2008, at the same time as the Summer Olympics, the China Central Television Headquarters , the broadcaster's new headquarters, opened.

censorship

According to a former employee, he received around 1,000 instructions a year from the censorship authorities as to whether and how he could report.
