Christophe Soglo

Christophe Soglo (born June 28, 1909 in Abomey ; † October 7, 1983 ) was President of Dahomey from 1965 to 1967 .

Life

Soglo came from the city of Abomey in Dahomey, France at the time (Benin since 1975). He joined the French army in 1931 and took part in World War II as a sub-lieutenant . He was then used in the Indochina War and was decorated with high honors.

After Dahomeys independence in 1960, he became a colonel in the Benin armed forces and chief of staff .

Between October 28, 1963 and January 25, 1964, after the resignation of Coutoucou Hubert Magas, he was head of state for a short time as chairman of a three-man military junta . He handed over the office to the former head of government Sourou-Migan Apithy after a new constitution was approved in a referendum . After the latter was overthrown in a military coup on November 27, 1965 , Soglo, now a general, took over the leadership again on December 22, 1965.

Another coup by younger officers ended his term on December 19, 1967.
