Justin Ahomadegbé-Tomêtin

Justin Ahomadegbé-Tomêtin (born January 16, 1917 in Abomey , † March 8, 2002 in Cotonou ) was President of Dahomey , today's Benin , in 1972 .

Life

Ahomadegbé-Tomêtin attended the École normal William Ponty and then studied dentistry in Dakar . After founding the Rassemblement Démocratique Africain (RDA) party in 1945, he founded its national association for Dahomey, France at the time . From 1959 to 1960 he was President of the country's parliament. After independence on August 1, 1960, he was in opposition to the first President Coutoucou Hubert Maga .

After his resignation in October 1963, he became Prime Minister and Vice President. When President Sourou-Migan Apithy was overthrown by General Christophe Soglo on November 27, 1965 , his term of office also ended. He later became a judge at the Supreme Court and according to the new constitution of 1970 he took over the presidency on May 7, 1972, in which the three members of the Presidential Council were to take turns. On October 26, 1972, he was overthrown and imprisoned by another military coup led by Mathieu Kérékou .
