Japan took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome with a delegation of 162 athletes (142 men and 20 women) in 96 competitions in 17 sports. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was gymnast Takashi Ono , who, like four years earlier, was the most successful athlete in his nation, winning a total of six medals. Otherwise Japan was particularly successful in gymnastics, as well as in swimming. A medal was won in each of four other sports.
