Japan took part in the IV Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 with a delegation of 31 athletes in 7 sports. Here the athletes could not win any medals. The most successful athlete was Ishihara Shōzō with a 4th place in speed skating over 500 meters. Japan was the only Asian country with a delegation to the 1936 Winter Games.
