Norway took part in the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with a delegation of 31 athletes. Six women and 25 men were among them. At the end of the Olympic Winter Games, the Norwegian delegation took first place in the medal table with a total of seven gold medals, ahead of the German Empire and Sweden.
The Norwegian speed skater Ivar Ballangrud carried the flag at the opening ceremony and was the most successful starter in the Norwegian team with three gold medals and one silver medal. The youngest Norwegian starter was 16-year-old Laila Schou Nilsen and the oldest starter was 34-year-old Alf Konningen . Both Nilsen and Konningen took part in alpine competitions.

For the third time in a row Sonja Henie , who also went to the top favorite, won the gold medal in the women's figure skating. Before her, only the Swede Gillis Grafström succeeded in doing this , who became Olympic champion in figure skating for men in 1920, 1924 and 1928.

Speed skating
Ivar Ballangrud became the star of the Olympic Winter Games in 1936. He started speed skating over all distances and was able to win three gold medals, each with an Olympic record. Only over the 1500 meters did his teammate Charles Mathiesen snatch the gold medal with an Olympic record and Ballangrud had to be content with silver. With his three gold medals and one silver medal, he was the best athlete at the Winter Olympics. The third Norwegian speed skater to win a medal was Georg Krog with the silver medal over the 500 meters

Nordic combination
The Nordic Combined competition consisted of a cross-country skiing over 18 kilometers and two jumps from the normal hill. While the ski jumping competition was held separately, the Nordic Combined took part in the cross-country competition over 18 kilometers, in which medals are also awarded in cross-country skiing. For the fourth time in a row, only Norwegians won the medals in Nordic combined. Apart from Norway, only the German team managed to win all medals in a Nordic Combined competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics .

Alpine skiing
The only 16-year-old Laila Schou Nilsen won the first medal in the alpine competitions held for the first time with the bronze medal. After she had led after the descent, she fell back to third place through the slalom. After the descent, Birger Ruud led the men, but fell back to the ungrateful fourth place in the slalom.

Cross-country skiing
For the second time in a row, Norway remains in cross-country skiing without a gold medal at the Olympic Games. In the individual competition over the 18 kilometers, Oddbjørn Hagen , who won the gold medal in Nordic combined, won the silver medal. He also formed the Norwegian relay team with Sverre Brodahl , Olaf Hoffsbakken and Bjarne Iversen , which won the silver medal in the relay competition.

Ski jumping
After Birger Ruud had already won the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in 1932 , he made history with his second Olympic victory because he is the first ski jumper to defend his Olympic victory. In addition, Reidar Andersen was able to win the bronze medal.
