Charles Mathiesen
Charles Arthur Mathiesen (born February 12, 1911 in Drammen , Viken ; † November 7, 1994 there ) was a Norwegian speed skater .
His career spanned a total of 18 years from 1930 to 1948. The highlight of his career was winning the gold medal over 1500 meters at the 1936 Olympic Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
In 1938 Mathiesen became all- around European champion . On March 3, 1940, he was able to set a new world record time of 17: 01.5 minutes over 10,000 meters.
The Second World War prevented him from achieving further successes. His last major competition was the 5000-meter run at the 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz , where he had to give up due to breathing difficulties due to the high altitude.
