career

After winning two bronze medals and two silver medals at world all-around championships , Ard Schenk became world all-around champion for the first time in 1970 in Oslo . He defended this title the following year in Gothenburg and repeated the title win in Oslo in 1972. In his last triumph, Schenk even became the first speed skater to win all four distances since 1912.

In the years 1966, 1970 and 1972 Schenk became European all-around champion .

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble he won his first Olympic medal with silver in the 1500 meters. Four years later, Schenk won three out of four routes in Sapporo . He was Olympic champion in the 1500m, 5000m and 10000m. Only in the 500 meter race was the Dutchman unable to win a medal due to a fall.

After the 1972 Winter Olympics , Schenk turned professional. After the end of his active career, he became a member of the technical committee for speed skating at the International Skating Union .

Schenk led the nobility calendar between 1966 and 1976 for six years and 58 days. His highest score was 166.241 points.
