The Max Aicher-Arena (formerly Inzell ice stadium ) is an indoor artificial ice rink with a 400 m speed skating rink and an indoor ice hockey rink. Until the end of 2009 it was an open-air facility.

prehistory

About five kilometers from Inzell is the Frillensee , which freezes over very reliably early in the year. Since the lake, 270 meters long and 160 meters wide, allowed the establishment of a regular 400-meter running track on its frozen surface, a center of German speed skating established itself there and in Inzell from 1959. All the more so since even in larger cities with ice-skating clubs such as what was then West Berlin , Hamburg and Cologne, only “short tracks” on relatively small artificial ice surfaces were available for speed skaters.

In 1965, a 400-meter artificial ice rink with an attached small swimming pool was built in Inzell itself . In 1967/68 a windbreak system with changing rooms, sanitary rooms and a strength training room was built.

In 1971, an athletics facility with a playing field was built north of the ice rink. Three years later the lighting system was converted into a high mast system. In the years 1981/82 a company building with a garage as well as a water treatment plant , administration, trainer and classrooms were built. The refrigeration technology was partially renovated and a heat pump was installed. By building a deep well, the system was converted to a cooling water supply. In 1985 the entire ice rink was completely renovated and the swimming pool, sauna area and the area of the main entrance were rebuilt, and sports accommodation and lounges were created. In 1993 the lighting system was renovated. In 1995 a new sports hall was added. Between 1995 and 1997, the refrigeration system was renewed by replacing the existing piston compressors with screw compressors with electronic controls.

New hall construction

Erection of the wooden roof structure

From September 2009, a new roofed stadium was built over the former open-air facility for 36 million euros , which can hold 6,000 spectators. Training began in December 2010, and the stadium was officially opened in March 2011 with the World Speed Skating Individual Distance Championships . The building contractor Max Aicher from Freilassing secured the title Max Aicher Arena for 20 years through name sponsorship . The name Ludwig Schwabl was retained in the form of the street name Ludwig Schwabl Sportpark .
