The James B. Sheffield Olympic Skating Rink is an outdoor speed skating rink in the US city of Lake Placid in New York State .
history
The stadium was at the Winter Olympics in 1932 at Lake Placid built. In addition to the speed skating competitions , six of the twelve games of the Olympic ice hockey tournament were held in the interior of the oval. Furthermore, the stadium was the start and finish area of the cross-country skiing competitions and served as the Olympic stadium for the games, where the opening and closing ceremonies were held. There was a grandstand next to the ice rink, which had space for 7,500 people and was demolished after the games. Two weeks after the games, the all- around world championship took place on the ice rink .
When the 1980 Winter Olympics were awarded to Lake Placid in October 1974, an artificial ice rink was built at the same location and was completed in autumn 1977. A few months later, the 1978 sprint world championship was held on the track .
During the 1980 Winter Olympics , Eric Heiden won a total of five gold medals and set a world record over 10,000 meters with a time of 14: 28.13 minutes. This was the only world record set on the ice rink.
The last international competition took place with the all-around world championship for women in 1989 .
