Niemann and Pechstein fought an indirect fight over 5000 meters. The dominant runner of the decade set a new world record and was the first woman to stay under seven minutes. The joy was short-lived, because this time her Berlin rival was lucky enough to run after her. The technically better Pechstein, who was mostly left behind in the direct duel, used this chance and divided the race exactly according to the time of the competition. In the end, the lead was four hundredths of a second.
