Gianni Petrus Cornelis Romme (born February 12, 1973 in Lage Zwaluwe ) is a Dutch speed skater and trainer.

Career

Romme was world champion in all-around competitions in Milwaukee in 2000 and in Gothenburg in 2003 . In 2003 he also won the title at the all- around European championships in Heerenveen .

Romme won seven titles at the World Single Distance Championships . He won over 10,000 meters four times (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000) and three times over 5000 meters (1998, 1999, 2000).

At the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano , Romme was Olympic champion over 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. Four years later he won silver in Salt Lake City over 10,000 meters behind his compatriot Jochem Uytdehaage .

Romme set eight world records during his career and led the nobility calendar for 118 days. For his successes in 2000 he was awarded the Oscar Mathisen Memorial Trophy .

Since the 2006/2007 season, Romme has also been working as a speed skating trainer, including the German Olympic champion Anni Friesinger-Postma .
