Hans van Helden (born April 27, 1948 in Almkerk , Noord-Brabant ) is a former Dutch - French speed skater .
Van Helden won his first international medals at the European speed skating all- around championships in 1973 in Grenoble, France, and in Eskilstuna , Sweden in 1974 - silver and bronze in the four-way competition. His most successful year was 1976, when he won bronze medals at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria , in the 1500 m, 5000 m and 10,000 m. The speed skating all-around world championship in 1976 in Heerenveen , the Netherlands, he also finished with the bronze after he had run the best time over 5000 m. He finished fourth in the Sprint World Championship . In addition, he set two new world records over 1500 m and 5000 m this season.
After van Helden could not qualify for the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid , USA, in 1980 , he decided to compete for France in the future. Through his marriage to the French speed skater Marie-France van Helden , he had obtained the necessary citizenship.
In 1984 in Sarajevo , Yugoslavia, and in 1988 in Calgary , Canada , van Helden took part in the Winter Olympic Games. His best result was a fourth place over 1500 m in Sarajevo. Although he could no longer build on his previous performance, he still reached first place in the individual ranking at the all- around European championships in 1984 in Alma-Ata , Soviet Union over the 1500 m. He finished sixth in the overall standings. In 1988 in the same place he was third over the 10,000 m at the all-around world championships; He finished the big four-way battle in eighth place.
Due to the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , France , van Helden attempted a comeback , but was unable to assert himself in the qualification and then ended his career.
