Nikolai Alexejewitsch Guljajew ( Russian: Николай Алексеевич Гуляев ; born January 1, 1966 in Vologda ) is a former Russian speed skater who started for the Soviet Union .

Guljajew was 1987 all around world champion in Heerenveen . He set a world record over 1500 meters and took the lead in the aristocratic calendar . He also won that year at the European all- around championship in Trondheim . Because of this success he was awarded the Oscar Mathisen Memorial Trophy .

At the Olympic Games in Calgary in 1988 , Guljajew won the gold medal over 1000 meters ahead of Uwe-Jens Mey . A few weeks before the Games, he was arrested while smuggling illegal substances, but it could not be proven that he had actually used these doping substances. So the IOC could not deny him the start in Calgary.
