Sven Tomas Gustafson (born December 28, 1959 in Katrineholm ) is a former Swedish speed skater .

Athletic career

At the age of 20 Gustafson was able to achieve his first success with fourth place at the all-around European championships in 1979 . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid , he finished seventh over 1500 meters.

In 1982 he became European champion in the all-around competition. In these championships he set a new world record over 10,000 meters. In 1983 he was second behind Rolf Falk-Larssen at the all-around world championships. Gustafson had won the most points, but Larssen had won three out of four courses. This was enough for him to win under the rules of the time. After the World Championships, the rules were corrected based on this result, so that in 1984 the rule with the three wins was abolished.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo , he won the gold medal over 5000 meters ahead of Igor Malkov . Over 10,000 meters he took second place behind Malkow.

In 1988 he won all four routes at the European Championships in the all-around competition and was therefore a favorite for the Olympic Games in Calgary . Over 5000 and 10,000 meters, Gustafson was able to live up to his role as favorite and won the gold medal in each case. For this achievement he was honored with the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal and won the radio sports Jerringpris .

In 1992 he appeared again at the Olympic Games , but could only occupy thirteenth place in Albertville . Then he resigned from competitive sports.

Gustafson is married to the former curler Elisabet Gustafson .
