Sverre Melvin Farstad (born February 8, 1920 in Trondheim , † March 27, 1978 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian speed skater .

Career

Farstad surprisingly won the bronze medal at the European speed skating championships in 1947 and the silver medal shortly afterwards at the world championships . Before that, he was only ninth at the Norwegian national championship and was only able to start internationally because seven of the best Norwegian runners had canceled their participation 14 days before the start of the European championship.

The following year he was Olympic champion in the 1,500 m and sixth in the 500 m at the first Winter Olympics after the Second World War in St. Moritz . In 1949 he became European champion in the all-around competition. He also set the only world record in his career.

After the end of his active career, Sverre Farstad worked as a sports journalist.
