Derek Parra (born March 15, 1970 in San Bernardino , California ) is an American speed skater .
At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, he won the gold medal over 1500 meters and silver over 5000 meters behind the Dutchman Jochem Uytdehaage .
Parra was world champion in inline skating before he switched to speed skating because inline skating was not Olympic. His most successful season was the 2001/2002 season. In addition to winning the two Olympic medals, he briefly held the world record over 5000 meters and came third in the all-round world championships.
At the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin , he could no longer convince and took 19th place over 1500 meters.
He lives in Orlando, Florida , is married and has one daughter.
